The MWBA was formed during the pandemic in 2022 and gave a home for women’s basketball players in Canada to take the next step in their journey and play beyond their varsity careers. Under a 10-game schedule, the Moncton Mystics, Halifax Hornets, Halifax Thunder, Windsor Edge, Fredericton Freeze and Port City Frog took to gyms across the east coast and the Halifax Hornets came out on top as the inaugural champions in a win over the Halifax Thunder at Saint Mary’s University.
The Hornets who finished 8-2 in their opening regular season on the way to a championship, kick off their home slate against the Halifax Thunder who finished 10-0 and were their opponents in the championship game. The Hornets were led by Acadia alum Chanel Smith and SMU guard Alaina McMillan. Chanel averaged 11.4 points per game and Alaina 9.6.
Their opponents the Thunder were led by AUS MVP Haley McDonald of the Acadia Axewomen and McMaster alum Vanessa Pickard. Haley averaged 18.9 points per game in the MWBA’s inaugural season, the second leading scorer. The rematch of the championship takes place on May 24th and is sure to be a great one.
The Hornet’s next home game is on May 28th when they meet the Windsor Edge who finished the 2022 regular season with a record of 4-6. The Windsor Edge were powered by two of the top three leading scorers in 2022 in Karissa Kajorinne and Tiffany Reynolds, two graduates of the Lakehead University Women’s Basketball program.
To close out their home triple threat, the Hornets meet the Thunder again on May 31st. Halifax Hornets will be hosting their first tryout on April 10th at St. Vincent University and they are open to all eligible players.
