Garvey and Hall stand out in TMU win over Varsity Blues

The TMU Bold women’s basketball team won 66-47 on Wednesday night at the University of Toronto to move to 5-0 on the season. TMU is still undefeated and there were parts of their game tonight that looked real good.

Kaillie Hall continues to be one of the league’s best one-on-one defenders. Putting Kaillie on anybody up and down the lineup because of her physicality and length really opens things up for the Bold defensively. Pressuring full court, fighting through screens, switching wherever necessary and winning her matchup, Kaillie’s presence was all over the TMU win this evening.

Another aspect that looked real good was TMU’s point guard play, and that is due to partly Kaillie but also their rookie of the year candidate, Catrina Garvey. Catrina is the teams fourth leading scorer, and when you watch her on the court, she has all the traits of a veteran point guard, with the added touch of being able to burn teams off the ball getting to spots on the perimeter. Catrina shared ball handler duties with Kaillie, and together they combined for 34 points, five rebounds and six steals.

TMU went up 39-25 at halftime, and from then on, it was all transition opportunities and rebounding. TMU got 10 fast break points to the Varsity Blues two, and the Bold won the rebounding battle 54-40.

In the front court, TMU’s Jessica Keripe played 20 minutes notching five rebounds, a forward for the Bold who’s continued progression is a great sight. Jessica has experience not only with the Bold but playing in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association, and having the experienced veteran coming off the bench is great depth for the Bold.

TMU shot 32 per cent from the field, finding a lot of their success in the mid to long range, or getting to the line before the Varsity Blues defence was set up.

Once the Varsity Blues were able to get set up, Sabrina Nero locked down the paint, and did she ever put on a show defensively. 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks, Sabrina provided key stops for the Varsity Blues at different moments of the game, and like Waterloo has done, the Varsity Blues structuring their defence around the play of Sabrina in the paint may prove to be a successful tool going through the season.

TMU won the second half 27-22 on the way to their victory, and both sides are set for a rematch on Saturday November 18th at the MAC. Full box score available here.
