We only have two weekends left until the Legacy Cup championship tournament. Six games over Saturday and Sunday in Halifax, action throughout the week and the final regular season play next weekend before the Cup is played at TD Station in Saint John.
Every team wanted to stay hot throughout the season, but at this point there has only been one team that’s been able to do so. The Halifax Thunder with the Lakehead duo of Karissa Kajorinne and Tiffany Reynolds are a perfect 7-0, and they’ll look to make that 8-0 this weekend as they are in the final stretch of their dominant season.
They take on the Moncton Mystics on Saturday at 7pm AT. The Mystics being a team who just fell to the Port City Fog earlier this week 74-66. The Thunder sit 1.5 games ahead of Fredericton who are at 4-2 while Moncton sits 0.5 games ahead of the Halifax Hornets who are 2-5. An important game for seeding, both teams may have significantly more to play for depending on the final of the two previous Saturday games.
The first game kicking off the Saturday slate features the Hornets who are looking to climb above Moncton. They take on the third place Port City Fog who are tied with Fredericton after their win over Moncton. With the league’s leading scorer Kaylee Kilpatrick coming off a great game for Port City, the Hornets will have to do a lot to contain the versatile offence and threat from all over the floor. On the side of the Hornets, Jasmine Parent leads the team in scoring at 14.5 with Hannah Brown not far behind at 13.2.
The team tied with Port City, the Fredericton Freeze, take the court second on Saturday when they play the Windsor Edge who are looking for their first win of the season. Fredericton has the Windsor Edge, Halifax Hornets, Port City Fog and Moncton Mystics remaining on their schedule and as they sit 2.5 games behind the Thunder, each win is vital to try and catch up to the top team and gain the top seed going into the championship.
As we get into action on Sunday June 4th, the Fredericton Freeze are back on the floor taking on the Halifax Hornets in a must in for both sides. The Freeze need to win all four to have a shot at jumping the Thunder and the Hornets are going to finish the season in a battle with Moncton for the middle of the standings.
The second match of Sunday features the Windsor Edge and Moncton Mystics as both teams try and gain some momentum going into the tournament in Saint John. The final match of the weekend is the Port City Fog and Halifax Thunder as two of the three top teams in the league go at it to solidify their spot in the standings going into the final weekend of the regular season.
The championship tournament is drawing closer, but the standings are just as jumbled as they were when the league tipped off on April 29th. Teams tied, only one real top dog, and the middle of the pack fighting for momentum as we near the end. Broadcast info for all games on the MWBA website.
