The Port City Fog beat the Halifax Hornets 83-68 at SMU in Halifax on Saturday afternoon and despite a mid game push from the Hornets, they maintained control throughout.
Kaylee Kilpatrick is having a MVP season leading the MWBA in scoring, and it continued today with another double-double. Shooting threes, dominating the glass, knocking down midrange shots, there’s nothing Kaylee can’t do, and there was little Halifax could limit.
The threes weren’t falling for either side in the first quarter, and it wasn’t until midway through the second when the Hornets broke the lid on the net hitting threes consistently throughout the second and third quarter.
A 14-5 start for the Fog led to a 20-8 lead at the end of the first, and the Hornets were left looking for momentum and a prayer that the looks they were getting would fall.
Trying to get momentum, the Hornets looked to their defence in the second quarter, and a series of forced turnovers and threes turned a 31-19 Fog lead into a 33-32 game with the Hornets down just one in the second quarter.
A game that went into halftime tied at 37 with the Hornets holding the momentum, switched back in favour of the Fog and the play of Reese Baxendale in the third. Reese found her way to the rim constantly, and paired with Mackenzie Ryan finding kick outs to the perimeter, Port City rarely stumbled offensively throughout the game and it constantly put pressure on the Hornets to keep up their pace.
Port City went into the fourth up 58-49 and despite the efforts from Courtney Donaldson who made her impact beyond the arc, it wasn’t enough to overtake Port City and the Fog got the win to move into sole possession of second place at 5-2, the Hornets 2-6.
