Sarah Nurse Sends Canada To Semis

Team Canada Women’s Hockey are on to the semifinals. After a thrilling overtime victory, Canada remains undefeated in the Women’s World Championship and takes down Sweden, 3-2.

Two goals by Sarah Nurse including the overtime winner contributed to a performance that was mostly controlled by the Canadians in a win. Sweden opened the game attacking and limiting Canada’s chances, getting the first two shots on net, but they were unable to capitalize.

Canada found their first goal from Blayre Turnbull 9 minutes into the game and that opened up their play and for the next two periods they controlled the pace and the shots.

The Canadians finished the first period leading 1-0 and leading the shots 14-5, and they continued to attack in the second despite increased chances by Sweden.

Sweden got two power plays early in the second period, but the ability to control pace and possession allowed Canada to kill each and not concede a goal. Once they got over the two penalty kills, Canada continued their attack and Nurse found her first goal.

13 minutes into the second period, Nurse battled on the boards and poked free on a break along the right side, putting it past and in net to put Canada up 2-0.

As they continued to control pace, shots went further and further in favour of the red and white. Sweden got their first goal near the end of the second period but Canada held a 2-1 lead with a 33-10 shot advantage going into the third.

Sweden worked throughout the third period to try and tie it up, but good defence from both sides kept the game at a 2-1 score, until the final minute when a push from Sweden got them a goal with 9 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Canada, now having to take back the game from a hungry Sweden team, started overtime immediately on the offensive, and that kept up until Sarah Nurse got the puck in the right circle and put it above the glove to give Canada the 3-2 win and send them to the semifinals.
